On Tuesday the 7th of September Lesotho army commander Lieutenant General Khoantle Motsomotso was shot dead at a barracks when two senior officers tried to force their way into his office. The two officers were killed by Motsomotso’s bodyguards. The bloody shootout took place two months after the latest elections and weeks before the start of the 2017 Lesotho Sky stage race.

As we watch the current leadership crisis unfold among the highest levels of power in the country, we remind ourselves that since the first Lesotho Sky event took place in 2011, the country has been through a number of significant political challenges. At no stage in previous or current events has there been a threat to our team, the company, nor to our partners or riders. We would like to assure everyone that the safety of all participants, crew and supporters is our greatest concern.

As the situation currently stands, we are committed to hosting the 7th edition of the Lesotho Sky Event and believe, as always, that it will be the best one yet.
We are keeping a close watch on the situation and will respond to it as it develops.
